Chris brings a strong materials chemistry and photonics background alongside management, composition, and editing experience and excels at research, management, product development, writing, marketing, and, most especially, scientific communication.

Critical thinking, data analysis and business communication

Chris holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry and a B.S. in Chemistry with Honors, and did a postdoc at Rice University. Considering his 33 publications, 1849 citations, h-index of 19 and i-index of 21, he is on par with associate professors of nanoscience. Since his interests lie beyond the classroom, he joined Heat Inverse as a Sr Scientist. His specialty in photonics and nanomaterials has allowed him to understand the science of Passive Radiative Daytime Cooling, a phenomenon where materials cool by emitting heat directly into space.

Beyond chemistry, Chris has versatile interests and will teach himself as needed to meet the needs of an organization. At Heat Inverse, he helped develop a Python model to predict cooling power as well as analyzed data to evaluate the impact of cooling on real-world pilot trials. Chris also supported Heat Inverse with his expertise in scientific communication and technical writing. He has written multiple internal reports on product tests he planned, executed, and analyzed. He has branched out into business communication, composing marketing material such as onepagers, flyers, postcard ads, sales guides, technical brochures, and installation guides. Chris supported business strategy by developing potential customer lists, meeting with collaborators and investors, and composing a business case.

Product management

Chris was a Managing Editor of ACS Nano at The American Chemical Society, a major nonprofit devoted to communicating chemistry. In this role, Chris actively engaged with the scientific community to solicit research articles, reviews, and perspectives from top researchers. He coordinated research articles, reviews, perspectives, and editorials by leading authors in nanoscience, expanding the journal’s community. In addition, he provided extensive technical edits to various manuscripts, organized monthly editor meetings, and conducted yearly Editorial Advisory Board meetings. Chris communicated with authors and the organization as a whole, including on serious issues such as author misconduct allegations following formal policies set by the organization. As a result, he significantly increased the journal’s key performance indicators: impact factor by approximately 15% in two years, with a projected increase of 30% within three years. His efforts also led to a 60% increase in Twitter mentions in one year.

Leadership

Chris excels at leading by influence, establishing a routine and maintaining momentum. As a graduate student, he mentored three undergraduates and as a postdoc he mentored three gradaute students. At ACS Nano he helped lead a group of Associate Editors, top scientists from around the world. His discipline and attention to detail is illustrated by his success in sustaining a virtual science fiction club for 5 years. He has also mentored junior colleagues in academia and industry, and collaborated with multiple departments to achieve objectives in large organizations.
